IPL 2022 New Teams

Updated on December 19, 2024 , 4224 views

IPL is India’s biggest cricket championship, and its 15th edition, IPL 2022, is expected to be hosted by Vivo between 27th March 2022 to 21st May 2022. BCCI decided to add two new teams before the event, and it will soon begin the bidding for the new franchises. 2022 IPL mega auction rules will also be updated soon to carry on with the bidding.

IPL New Team 2022

As two new teams will be added to the 2022 IPL team list, the game is also predicted to change the format. Now, the tournament is to be divided into two groups having five teams each and a total of 74 players. The players, BCCI, and the franchises will also benefit from the changed structure as the overall rewards will rise up with the increased number of matches. Moreover, revenues will also rise with the extended broadcast deals.

New IPL Teams 2022

The BCCI has put its emphasis on selling the two new clubs, which will be added from the following season before the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). This will happen in the mega auction in IPL. The board invited the tender to buy two new IPL franchises and will be available until 5 October 2021.

Reports indicate that the board has included six Indian cities -

  • Guwahati
  • Cuttack
  • Ranchi (all east)
  • Lucknow (central)
  • Ahmedabad (west)
  • Dharamsala (north)

These are the options for two new teams, in line with the zonal imbalance and business potential.

The BCCI intends to bring the cash-rich league into Hindi-speaking areas in the north to maintain the balance of the world's most famous franchise league across India.

With Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Royal Challengers Bangalore representing three of the country's southern cities, BCCI has now clearly shown that even if Visakhapatnam and Kochi's likes were in the fray, no city from the south would be included. However, with this, the pending proceedings with the former Kochi (Kochi Tuskers Kerala) worked against them.

The BCCI has also travelled the west, north, and east, with 65% of the IPL's four billion minutes of viewing from the Hindi region. Only Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings are from the northern region because Jaipur-based Rajasthan Royals is seen as the centre area as per the cricket map. Hence, the board expects the IPL to expand beyond Delhi Capital and Punjab Capital in the north.

Sony Ten 3 was the No. 1 sports channel in the county, now broadcasting India's England tour, when the channel captured 50.4% of overall spectator numbers in India and England, compared to 10.6% and 0.4% of English and Tamil-Telugu, respectively, and the other 50.4% in SonyLiv live broadcasting.

Ten Teams in IPL 2022

According to sources, Ahmedabad, where the city's largest cricket stadium is in the world, is a possibility for one of the new teams in IPL 2022. Gujarat already has some experience hosting IPL matches with Gujarat Lions as one of the teams that replaced the then suspended Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals in the 2016 and 2017 seasons. A present CSK star, Suresh Raina, was the skipper of the Lions team owned by Keshav Bansal.

Another Indian city capable of hosting IPL matches is Pune, and it has its own popular team, too, named Pune Warriors (PWI). The PWI was led by Yuvraj Singh, but unfortunately, it had a bad record in the IPL as only 12 matches could be won during the three seasons for which the team played. In the shape of Kochi Tuskers Kerala, in addition to Pune and Gujarat, Kerala also had an IPL team. In conjunction with Pune Warriors India, the Kochi Tuskers were included in the IPL 2011, but after only one season, the Kerala-based club was removed. It was because the franchise could not pay the guarantee of 10% of the Bank because of an argument between the owners.

BCCI: Rs 5000 Crore Profits

In the cash-rich Indian Premier League’s IPL 2022 news and issue, the Control Board for Cricket in India might soon be upgraded by at least a maximum of Rs. 5,000 crores. The IPL, an 8-team event currently, will turn into a 10-team business with new IPL 2022 teams from the following edition. Moreover, the methods of the bidding process were shortened during the last Governing Council Meeting too.

A senior BCCI source said that any corporation is entitled to purchase a bid document that pays a total of 75 crores. Earlier top brass was considering maintaining two new teams' base price at 1700 INR, but subsequently, it was chosen to maintain the base price of 2000 INR. Thus, the auction for the next month's two teams will start at Rs. 2000 crore base price.

IPL 2022 Retention Rules

Previous IPL retention rules for mega auction specified that the franchises can retain a maximum of three players before the auction begins and then use the Right-to-Match (RTM) card for more than two players. Here, in case of a common liking, the team has to meet another team’s bidding price, and the winner will obviously be the team that has the highest bid for a player.

Recently, the BCCI members zeroed in on the decision to let the franchises retain only three players, as the new IPL 2022 teams will also have some marquee players.

A few franchises of IPL teams 2022 also wanted to retain a maximum of four players, but the BCCI may not permit it either. As for the availability of the RTM card, there is no clarity yet, but it surely will stay for the 2022 IPL season.

Conclusion

With the current pandemic scenario, there is no certainty in the fact of whether the players will be allowed to watch IPL 2022 season matches from the stadium or not. However, to ensure the safety of the players, the previous players’ guidelines related to saliva ban and bio-secure bubble protocols are still expected to continue until the Covid-19 situation is under control. BCCI will soon release the official IPL 2022 new teams name list with the addition of 2 new teams in IPL 2022. IPL retention rules 2022 will also favour the upcoming two new teams, as stated by various IPL 2022 latest news.
