In the inaugural season, Shikhar Dhawan played for Delhi Daredevils where he performed well by hitting 4 half-centuries. He was the third-highest scorer batsman of the team. In the next season, he was traded to Mumbai Indians and replaced with Ashish Nehra. He played two seasons for Mumbai Indian and subsequently was bought by Deccan Chargers for Rs. 1.38 crore in 2011.
In 2013 & 2014, he was selected as the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad where he managed the team well, but failed to lift the IPL trophy. In 2015, he scored 259 runs in 14 matches finishing Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 6th place.
