In 2006, at just the age of 19, Sharma achieved the first-class debut for India A. In the same year he also debuted for Ranji Trophy from Mumbai. In 2007, he had his first ODI debut at the age of 20. In 2008, at 21-years-old, he played for Deccan Chargers in the first season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
In 2010, at just 23, he became the captain of Mumbai Indians in its third IPL season. In 2013, Mumbai Indians witnessed victory under his captaincy. In the same year, he also scored his first ODI double century against Australia. In 2014, he scored his second ODI double century against Srilanka with 264 innings. In the same year, he became the highest individual scorer in single innings in ODI cricket.
In 2015, Mumbai Indians had their second victory under Sharma’s captaincy and the legacy repeated itself in 2017 when Mumbai Indians had their third victory under his captaincy. In the same year, Sharma has his third ODI double-century against Sri Lanka again with 208 innings. In 2019, Mumbai Indians won the IPL trophy for the fourth time under his captaincy.
